Lo chiamano ”desert swing”, per indicare la serie di eventi golfistici che da giovedì e per le prossime tre settimane si susseguiranno sui prati spuntati magicamente nei deserti della penisola arabica. I primi appuntamenti del circuito mondiale del golf si svolgono infatti a oriente, con l’Abu Dhabi Golf Championship dal 16 al 19 gennaio, seguito dal Qatar Masters di Doha (22-25 gennaio) e dal Dubai Desert Classic (30 gennaio-2 febbraio). L’appuntamento nell’emirato di Abu Dhabi è quello più ricco, con un montepremi di 2.700.000 dollari: a sperare nell’assegno più consistente sarà Henrik Stenson, il numero tre delle classifiche mondiali, che torna nella penisola arabica da favorito dopo aver vinto lo scorso anno la ”Race to Dubai”, il circuito 2013 del golf europeo che ha avuto la sua finale appunto nell’altro emirato degli Eau. Ma la concorrenza non mancherà per Stenson, visto che al via dell’Abu Dhabi Championship ci sono quattro dei primi dieci golfisti al mondo da Phil Mickelson, che ha in bacheca cinque tornei major ed è numero 5 al mondo, all’ex numero uno al mondo Rory McIlroy fino a Sergio Garcia, senza dimenticare Martin Kaymer, che ad Abu Dhabi ha già vinto tre volte. In più ci sarà il gallese Jamie Donaldson che proverà a difender il trofeo Falcon vinto nell’edizione dello scorso anno. Ma in campo ci sarà l’italiano Matteo Manassero, il 21enne veronese che ormai sta crescendo e in questo 2014 punta a entrare nella ristretta cerchia dei più forti del mondo. L’italiano parte con un piccolo vantaggio: lo scorso ottobre, infatti, è stato il primo tra i top player a provare il nuovo campo a diciotto buche che ospita il torneo, giunto alla sua nona edizione. I tre giorni di golf ad Abu Dhabi hanno chiaramente anche un valore commerciale, con l’emirato impegnato sempre di più a imporsi come destinazione turistica internazionale anche nel campo dello sport. E infatti secondo i dati dell’Iagto (L’associazione internazionale dei tour operator di golf) Dubai and Abu Dhabi stanno conoscendo la crescita più forte rispetto agli altri paesi del medio oriente e della penisola arabica: gli Eau sono all’ottavo posto al mondo per il tasso di crescita delle destinazioni golfistiche.
